About the
Author
“Gavin Lee Hurst the author of the dedicated
UK saltwater fly fishing book ‘A Fly in the Brine’
has been saltwater fly fishing for 25 years since he picked up
his first fly rod. His passion for angling has also extended to
other arms of the sport and he has been successfully fly fishing
for virtually every fish that swims in freshwater from salmon to
carp. He began his saltwater fly fishing in the estuaries and
along the coastline of his native North East of England
initially targeting sea trout and salmon and unintentionally
encountering several other species of saltwater fish such as
cod, coalfish (saithe), whiting and flounder. These fish were
caught on sea trout flies and he initially thought of them as
nuisance fish but as his experience and knowledge of the marine
environment and the animals that live there grew he began to
develop and tie flies to target particular saltwater species
from Bass to mackerel. Over time he learned to read the water he
was fishing making the observations that are needed to help find
the fish and capture them successfully in an array of conditions
and locations.

He also gained respect for all of the saltwater
fish that he has caught over the years that now number into the tens of
thousands. The observations that he has made and cast to memory from his
time saltwater fly fishing in the waters from the north of Scotland down
to the southern tip of Cornwall have been written about in his book ‘A
Fly in the Brine’
Its contents cover every
aspect of saltwater fly fishing with lots of images, illustrations and
detailed content with chapters devoted to the tides, the weather,
fishing from beaches, fishing the rocky shoreline, locating and fishing
rips, estuaries, coastal streams, man made structures, the forage,
saltwater flies, saltwater equipment, knots, saltwater casting, the
target fish species and ends with thoughtful comment regarding the
conservation and future of the sport. |
